DACA Statement

The Program for Latin American and Latino Studies at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville would like to stress its support and commitment to all students. As a program committed to free inquiry and critical thinking guided by knowledge of historical perspectives, we know that immigration is a complex issue that requires ample and open debate. We also know that we cannot afford to forget that at the heart of such critical inquiries and debates are human beings. As Chancellor Steinmetz underscored in his statement regarding DACA students on Sept. 1, 2017, these individuals were brought to this country by their parents as children through no fault of their own. They “have grown up in our state, attended our public schools and befriended our children, and have made contributions to our campuses, our economy and to our communities.” We know that their attendance at our university, contributions to our economy, and membership in our community, does not detract from these institutions. To the Dreamers and DACA recipients at our university, we want to let you know that the Program for Latin American and Latino Studies recognizes your accomplishments and potential as well as your struggles and concerns. In this time of great uncertainty, know that we value and will continue to support and assist you as you continue your studies here at the University of Arkansas. As this issue is being worked through our government officials, bodies, and process; we will ensure that you have all the information needed to plan accordingly.
